As to @fumblefingers’ clarified question, i’d say the reason that he returned finding doesn’t work has to do with the verb find. Both are grammatical and acceptable. Of finding in this case just modifies the noun, way. so the prepositions are different, but that is because of different requirements for different ways of using way. I am not sure that there is a reason beyond because that is the way english is. you can try to find x, or start to find x, but you can only continue finding x or end up finding x.
